In 1988, the Delta HF Integrale was to succeed the 4WD. Its engine delivered 20 more horsepower, but the main difference lay in its wider wings, which allowed larger wheels and tyres to be fitted to improve handling and put more power to the ground. Five thousand examples of the Delta HF Intégrale were built to obtain homologation, but quickly, as proof of the influence of racing results on the sale of road-going versions, another series of two thousand five hundred cars was produced.1.

In 1989, Lancia won a third consecutive title with the maximum points possible. Toyota was the new underdog with 101 points and one win. Biasion won his second title in a row with five victories (four on the HF Integrale and one on the HF Integrale 16V). He is ahead of Alex Fiorio, who drives a semi-private HF Integrale, and Kankkunen in a Toyota Celica GT-Four.

The Integrale 16V logically took over from the Integrale in 1990 and took the lion's share of the honours although Toyota, which had already made a name for itself the previous year, closed in on the Italian team in the overall standings. Didier Auriol won the Monte Carlo, Tour of Corsica and San Remo, three asphalt events.
